From D.C. to KSC Somat Knows Waste Reduction Technology
LANCASTER, Penn. (April 7, 2008) - From the Kennedy Space Center's "All American Picnic" to Capitol Hill, Somat Company, engineer and manufacturer of waste handling systems, is helping reduce waste one pound at a time.
Somat Company's pulping equipment was most recently put to use at the Kennedy Space Center's "All-American Picnic" as the Somat mobile recycling unit was on site to shred all of the waste material, which included food waste and compostable disposables. Through an agreement with Walt Disney World, Kennedy Space Center transported the compostable shredded garbage to their composting facility where it was put through a composting process and turned into soil for use in their parks.
And Somat Company's pulper that was installed on Capitol Hill in September has already reduced the cost of hauling waste by at least 60 percent.
"Somat is pleased to provide our waste reduction technology to Kennedy Space Center and to our nation's Capitol," said Lin Sensenig, general manager, Somat Company. "For nearly 50 years, our company has pioneered pulping and dewatering systems for foodservice waste installations. Somat Company remains committed to reducing operating costs, and we have dedicated ourselves to being a key player in the world's waste reduction efforts."
KSC has recently become a "Green Movement" Center, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) launched a "Green the Capitol" initiative after Democrats won the House majority in 2006.
"On average, Americans dispose of 475 pounds of food waste every year," said Sensenig. "Somat Company is committed to reducing the cost of trash removal, thus reducing overall operating costs for our clients. Recent interest in composting has spurred some of our customers to investigate pulping as a precursor to composting."
Somat Company, part of the ITW Food Equipment Group which was recently named the 2008 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, is a long-standing industry leader in the development and manufacturing of highly engineered waste equipment. Somat Company introduced the waste pulping concept to the food service industry in the 1950s and has been the industry leader in that niche market ever since. Based in Lancaster County, Penn., Somat Company is recognized worldwide for its waste reduction technology.
